South of the Border, West of the Sun (1992) is a Japanese novel by Haruki Murakami about a lonely man who begins a dangerous relationship with a mysterious woman, jeopardizing his marriage. It's filled with nostalgia and melancholy, of feeling isolated and lost, of young love and adult complications. It is considered as Murakami's best work. This book cover redesign project is an effort to make Murakami's book more appealing to younger generation. The black and white digital collage design aims to depict the dualistic nature of the book, which suggest that there are two ways of living; 'South of The Border', or 'West of The Sun'. The red thread was added to depict 'red thread of fate', also act as the main graphic element of this design. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never breaks. Two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of place, time. or circumstances. Murakami's book are known for their ambiguous endings. The red thread also serves as a connection between imagination and real world of the main character.
